Upsilon
Nu UNLV School of Dental Medicine welcomed its first class of students in September 2002. At first, the school operated out of temporary buildings on the main UNLV campus. In May of 2004, the school relocated to a new location on the UNLV Shadow Lane Campus. UNLV School of Dental Medicine graduated its second class of students this past May (2007). In an effort to provide activities and opportunities for fellow students, a group of interested dental students explored the possibility of starting a Dental Fraternity chapter. Upsilon Nu Chapter was installed at UNLV School of Dental Medicine on Friday, October 13, 2006, with 33 charter members. We are very pleased to have Dr. William Davenport as our Deputy Councilor. Our officers were soon formed with Paul Bitar as our Chapter President, Callisto Rojas--Vice President, Ashley Housley as secretary, Meredith Shulman-- treasurer and Shokofeh Motlagh as editor. The very first social event that was organized by Upsilon Nu was a night of bowling at The Orleans on December 1, 2006. What a night to remember! Who ever said dentists can’t bowl obviously hadn’t seen Upsilon Nu. Strike after strike!! Our UNLV Dental School holiday party soon followed. We celebrated the end of another semester as well as the upcoming holiday season with our classmates and faculty at the beautiful Palms Casino banquet hall with great food, music and most importantly, wonderful company. Our Upsilon Nu members have participated in various community outreach programs including a cookie decoration event for the residents of Regency Palms Nursing Home in December 2006. The next event was “Smiles for Success” which was geared to performing a full day of dental makeover for women from Shade Tree Shelter Home in February 2007. Finally, two of our members participated in a dental outreach to Tijuana Mexico, in March 2007 and once more in June 2007 to perform dental services to the underserved community. All events were incredibly successful! Our most recent event, the Psi Omega Bowling Tournament was held at Sunset Lanes in March 2007. The two main organizers for this successful event were our secretary, Meredith Shulman and our fundraising chair, Mina Calmelat. We feel that we have accomplished a great deal as a new Chapter and we are very excited about planning the upcoming summer semester with social gatherings as well as community services.
