Alpha Chapter - Univeristy of Maryland

The Alpha Chapter had a busy Spring semester starting with a New Year/Holiday Party on January 4th hosted by Dr. Daley. We then helped the first year students celebrate the end of anatomy by hosting our second Post-Gross Anatomy Bash on January 24th. The party was held at Pam Stove ('04) . and David Luppen's ('05) house and was a great success with about 70 people attending. The survivors of the histology and anatomy courses came to relax and be thankful for completing this rigorous part of first year.

Thanks to the generosity of students, faculty and staff, the Alpha Chapter raised $818 for the American Cancer Society by selling daffodils in March. This year we raised about $ 300 more than last year, which made it a highly successful fundraiser. Many thanks to Jennifer Davis ('04) for coordinating the project and to all the volunteers who sold daffodils in each class.
It is quite a job delivering so many daffodils in one day.

On March 21st, the Alpha Chapter sponsored a community service project at the Mt. Royal Elementary School. About twenty dental students from various years participated in this two hour event where oral hygiene techniques and devices were shown. The children and teachers asked many interesting questions about foods to eat and how to properly brush teeth. After the students were taught to perform proper oral hygiene, toothpaste and toothbrushes were handed out to all the kids. The dental students had a wonderful
time with the kids, and felt it was a worthwhile project. Several youngsters came up and gave the dental students a goodbye hug. This project is part of a continuous outreach program by the Alpha Chapter to local Baltimore schools.

The year ended with our second Senior Banquet honoring our graduating seniors and their significant others/spouses. Sixty people, including six alumni, enjoyed a delicious Italian dinner at Della Notte's in Baltimore's Little Italy. President Becky Pounds presented the thirteen seniors attending with certificates sponsored by the National Psi Omega Fraternity. She also presented the PHT (Pushing Him/Her Through) awards to the spouses and significant others. These are very special awards from National Psi Omega and were appreciated by those sharing the difficulties of dental school. The National Ahievement Award was presented to past president Roya Nakhgevany for her many contributions to the chapter. She will begin a Pediatric Dentistry program in New York. The National Achievement Award was also presented to Michael Reimels who organized the Toys for Tots program for the Chapter in 1999 and has run it for the last three years. He also helped begin the elementary school education program of the chapter. Mike is joining his wife Kate, a 2002 Chapter alumnus, in the Air Force. The National Award for Academic Excellence was presented to Dr. Lisa Simpson Cohen, who was Magna Cum Laude graduate and is entering an oral surgery program.

Nancy Bouchard, Alumni Relations Chair, thanks Drs. Don and Chris Liang and the other members of the Washington, DC Alumni Chapter for attending the banquet and for their continued support of the Alpha Chapter. Nancy also presented a plaque of appreciation to Dr. Thomas Daley, a past chapter deputy councilor and past National Psi Omega President. The award was presented to Dr. Daley for his support of and friendship to the Alpha Chapter, and for his dedication in helping rebuild the chapter. He is truly an honorary member of the chapter and is always there to lend an extra hand. Dr. Seibel then presented a certificate of appreciation to outgoing President Becky Pounds for her dedication and loyalty to the chapter. Her leadership was truly appreciated by all the members. On May 23rd we said goodbye to our 26 seniors at the graduation ceremonies.

We are now looking forward to a new year and send our congratulations and best wishes for a successful coming year to our new officers for 2003-2004: President, Christine Ibrahim, '05, 2nd year Vice President John Mohler, '06, 3rd year Vice President Matt Cline '05, 4th year Vice President Sumi Tripuraneni '04, Treasurer Brent Hanson, '04, and Secretary Niven Tien '05.
