The fall semester for Zeta Chapter at Penn Dental Medicine can best be characterized by one word: awesome! Board members decided to continue the growth of our chapter by initiating fifty new members from all four class years. Larger numbers equates to more lively events and more frequent gatherings at the fraternity house, which residents of the house thoroughly enjoy. We started off the year with our annual “Welcome Back” party which was very successful, as the house was filled with dental students, residents in specialty programs, and students from graduate schools throughout Penn. Friendships were forged, and the wonders that Psi O delivers to students were unveiled… a perfect way to entice potential recruits! Our veteran Head of Recruitment, Lucas Mantilla, with the help of our new Rush Chair, Justin Messina, held a Lunch & Learn in the freshman lecture hall for all new dental students; a panel of Psi O’s spoke about various aspects of our brotherhood, emphasizing the many benefits of membership. The students we accepted have made a great addition to the fraternity, and will ensure that our strength and improvement continues long after our upperclassmen have taken on “Alumni” status. We enjoyed our initiation dinner at Bellini Grill in Center City Philadelphia, a restaurant selected by one of our Social Chairs, Omar Souman. With sixty-two members in attendance, we dominated the restaurant, which graciously provided for us a customized three-course menu with our Greek letters printed on each. Next, we held a very festive Halloween Party, where all members came in costume! After that, and right before Penn Dental’s winter formal, “Odontoblast,” we hosted our annual Psi Omega-exclusive Wine&Cheese mixer, where we distributed the Pins, which members wore on their suits and dresses at the formal hours later. Just one week after Odontoblast, our Vice President, Meghan Stenvall, planned and hosted our “Holiday Party”, which had several trays of delicious catered Italian food. Members showed up to a warm house with merry spirits, great food, and the usual fun time that Psi O provides! Our Chairs of Fundraising & Alumni Relations, Dylan Bordonaro and Markus Hill, with the help of housemate Erica Erwin, had the dental supply company, Benco Dental, come to the house for an information session for all members. They generously donated many products that will soon be raffled off as a fundraiser to support the fraternity. We’ve been improving the house as well. A new member from the second year class, Vincent Foring, renovated our bar, changing the appearance from a standard wooden bar, to a very modern New York City-style one, with built in lights, and the Psi Omega Greek letters painted on the front by Kim Farrell, another enthusiastic member! We also recently painted the large Victorian- style porch, as well as renovated a few of the bedrooms. The house is looking better than ever, and will hopefully continue to improve. The spring semester is going to be a blast as well. We are currently planning our annual “Frostbyte Party,” which is going to have a specific attire theme this year, yet to be decided. We will also be participating in an Oral Cancer Walk in Philadelphia, organized by our member, Natalie Powell, who has also courteously written a Philadelphia restaurant guide for our fraternity members. Thanks Nat! |
Psi Omega is currently planning to host a movie screening event designed to raise money for Operation Smile. The donations to this charitable organization will fund cleft palate surgeries to children that desperately need surgery. The cast and crew of the movie were all Psi Omega members and they plan to release the movie in March. This will be Dylan Bordonaro’s second dental school movie featuring many Psi Omega members. The fraternity will donate refreshments for the audience and plan an after party celebration. We are very excited to have new enthusiastic members that will soon be paving the future of Psi Omega at Penn Dental Medicine. Our rich history at the school, along with our very supportive alumni professors, Drs. Arthur Steinberg, Scott Nakamura, and Margrit Maggio, have enabled Psi Omega to remain a prestigious organization within the University, and have helped keep the honor of being a Psi Omega Fraternity member magnificent.
