The 2008-2009 school year started out on a fun note during the summer as Psi O members welcomed the freshmen class in July by hosting a “Post-Gross” party at Johnson’s Pub in historic downtown Charleston. Each year Psi O sponsors this event to celebrate with the freshmen their completion of a gross anatomy exam and allows them the opportunity to meet our members and let off steam after a couple of intense weeks of studying. Johnson’s Pub was a great setting and provided great food, drinks, and live entertainment!

The next event on the docket was our Annual Fishing Tournament in August. Anglers sought to catch the largest trout, flounder, redfish, sheephead or bonnethead shark in order to win great prizes. Prizes were also awarded to the largest blue crab and the ugliest toad fish! Our very own co-deputy councilor, Dr. Ted McGill, was the weighmaster for the event and announced the winners in each category. Afterwards, The Point Grill provided delicious barbeque and cool drinks for our tired and dedicated fishermen and guests.

October turned out to be a busy month for us as there were three activities members had an opportunity to attend. The month kicked off with our annual freshmen barbeque at Dr. Albenesius’s, otherwise known as Dr. A, home. We always host this dinner during rush week. This allows the freshmen another opportunity to meet our members and see what Psi O is all about. Dr Rivers once again provided some of his famous “Uncle Doc’s Special BBQ Sauce”, which is a crowd favorite and some of the best BBQ sauce you’ll ever taste! Once again, it was well attended by the freshmen and everyone had a fun time. We certainly counted it a success as we had 31 new members join this year!

Sigma Chi then sponsored a practice spotting practical for dental morphology providing a “test-like” environment for the freshmen as they tried to identify teeth. Afterwards, they ate pizza and Psi O members answered questions and gave pointers on how to better prepare for the real exam.

We closed out the month with a happy hour at California Dreaming overlooking the majestic Ashley River. We were treated to fabulous food and a great view of the Charleston skyline.

For the second year in a row, our members chipped in to participate in Families Helping Families and provided Christmas gifts for a family of seven. All the gifts were gathered and wrapped at our annual Christmas Party held at Dr. A’s home. We celebrated the event by roasting oysters, preparing low country boil, and fish stew and washing it all down with some nice cool beverages. It was a great way to round out the semester!

We hit the ground running in January with the initiation of our 31 new members at the gorgeous St. Luke’s chapel on the campus of MUSC. We followed the momentous occasion with a reception at Charleston Beer Works. We barely took a breath before we hosted our biggest event of the year – Casino Night! The MUSC Wellness Center was the venue for our night of “gambling” where participants could try their hand at Craps, Blackjack, and Texas Hold-em. Although no one is playing for real money, professional dealers run the tables as players try to “win” as much as they can before the night is through. Once the games stop, players turn in their chips for raffle tickets which they use for the opportunity to win awesome prizes. Some of the prizes are restaurant gift certificates, massages, rounds of golf, and fishing gear! We also had a silent auction for a one night stay at the Charleston Place Hotel with room service which was a highly contested item! A DJ played music for us all night and many went from the gaming tables to the dance floor to round the night out. It was another successful event with fabulous food, drinks, and fun!

The remainder of the spring looks to be just as much fun as the previous six months have been with two community service events, Give Kids a Smile and the Special Olympics, planned for February along with our Conclave meeting right here in Charleston! Many of our members are heading to Quito, Ecuador in March during spring break to serve and provide dental care to some of the under privileged people groups there. We’ll close out the semester with our Psi Olympics and recognize our seniors at a Senior banquet in their honor. The year 2009 looks to be a promising and exciting year and we look forward to all the activities that lie ahead!

We look forward to seeing all of you here in Charleston for our Conclave meeting in February!
