Phi
Rho Chapter The past summer and fall have been very good to the Phi Rho Chapter at UMKC School of Dentistry. Our summer was filled with many active members studying for boards and making plans for our upcoming fall rush. With a whole new class of potential new members we wanted to make sure we made an immediate and lasting impression on the new first years in order to show them what Psi Omega is all about. Thanks to our two rush chairs, Addie Allen (’11) and Allyson Sundby (’11), the Phi Rho chapter was able to add 60 new members! Needless to say we are very pleased and excited about all the new activities that are now possible with such a large chapter. Our new members were initiated in the first week of October but not before getting a good taste of what Psi Omega is all about. Our chapter started the semester off right with another successful turnout at a kickoff BBQ at our faculty sponsor, Dr. Brian Williams’, beautiful downtown KC loft. This BBQ is one of the first opportunities to let our new members get to know each other outside of the classroom and speak with upper classmen about the challenges they will face. (As well as a chance to enjoy some great KC BBQ.) We continued the semester by hosting the annual Beer Olympics in which three dental fraternities compete in a laundry list of events such as Dental Trivia, 3-legged race and bat-spin relay, that become more fun and more challenging as the day progresses and the beverage supply dwindles. This year our chapter was in charge of the event and the turnout was fantastic as over 100 people participated. The Phi Rho chapter really stepped it up this fall with our service projects. The first of two projects newly started was a partnership with Operation Breakthrough. Operation Break- through is a privately funded school for children in the KC metro area that are severely underprivileged. The school provides meals, education and a caring environment for children who might be homeless or taken care of by siblings who are mere children themselves. Several chapter members underwent an orientation in October and are able to volunteer their time whenever they are free. Chapter member Dustin Kruse (’10) was able to get over $1,000 in books donated to our chapter that we will in turn read to the children before donating the books to Operation Breakthrough. This has proven to be a wonderful opportunity for our members to give back to the community and to be reminded of just how lucky we are. Another service project our chapter took on this fall was a fluoride varnish program implemented at partnering school, Johnson Elementary. Led by Chris Hawkins (’10), members were able to teach oral health information and apply fluoride varnish to children at the school on two separate occasions. Both of the above listed service projects will be continued on what we hope to be a long-term basis. Also this spring, members will be teaming up with a local church to provide dental education to teenage moms in the area. We like to use these opportunities as a chance to integrate our newer into our chapter and allow them to share their brand new dental knowledge while making a difference in our community. Along with our service projects this spring, our chapter is looking forward to another busy social semester with functions including our second annual St. Patrick’s Day Party, a schoolwide dodge ball tournament and our annual Stein Party. As you can tell, Phi Rho is busy and excited about another great semester. Peter
