Chapter Check-In

Phi Rho Chapter
University of Missouri
at Kansas City (UMKC)

The Phi Rho Chapter of Psi Omega at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry had a successful fall semester as expected. We gained 52 new members to our organization in September which was awesome! We’d like to credit it to the fact that our current members are great leaders and role models, but whatever the reason we are very pleased to be represented by so many great leaders. Our numbers may add new possibilities and has already brought forth the chance for more participation with the community.

As always no one can believe that Christmas break is here and gone already. We have all made our new year’s resolutions and more than likely most of them have already been broken or forgotten. We only hope that no one had plans to quit drinking sodas seeing as though we need the pop tabs for Ronald McDonald and bad teeth mean more business! As our fraternity continues to partner with Ronald McDonald for pop tabs and meals, the planning of the 2nd Annual Dodge Ball Tournament in March that we host to help raise money for their other needs has begun. We’d like to incorporate a food/clothing drive, a game night with Ronald McDonald House and an adopt a highway day or two. All in all, our young officers are faring well and holding their own with service even with the notoriously dreadful second year schedule!

All the hard work must be balanced with some fun in order to keep our sanity and have “bonding” time with our fellow members. Our Phi Rho began the semester with the 4th Annual Olympic Invitational, this year hosted by another fraternity. I guess you can say that it is a good thing we pride ourselves on academics and service because with exams just around the corner, our showing was small. But those that were there had a great time competing and arguing the fact that the officials were bias (probfraterably because they were members of the hosting fraternity)! As you can tell, we are not bitter at all. However we made our social comeback with a great showing at the rooftop barbeque held at our faculty advisor’s home, Dr. Brian Williams. More than 130 members and spouses became a bit more acquainted with each other as we enjoyed the view from downtown Kansas City and we ate until the rain poured in, literally. Then the Oktoberfest trip to Hermann provided another great opportunity break away from the chaos of school. But yes, some studying and lab-work kept most of our members in Kansas City that weekend. Next semesters fun to come will include a St. Patrick’s Day event, possibly a Boulevard Brewery Tour and of course our annual Stein Party, Casino Night and Senior Wine Party!

We members of the Phi Rho chapter from the University of Missouri Kansas City clan are anticipating an eventful semester ahead of us. A new year motivates us to move forward and hopefully in doing so we can add a few new ideas to our fraternity and let the several new minds that we gained go to work for us in helping the community! Looking ahead, we expect a busy time where every bit of it counts! It’s great to make people smile and is most definitely worth the stress of trying to do so much in what little time seems to fl y by faster and faster. Our future looks as bright as the Big Apple’s Ball on New Years and we look forward to the challenges this new year of 2008 will bring!
