Delta Psi Chapter
The Baylor College of Dentistry
Dallas, Texas

The past Summer and Fall sessions have been fast and furious at The Baylor College of Dentistry, as we are sure it has been elsewhere in the United States. Each year certainly goes by faster! Soon enough, in May, it will be time to welcome our newest members from the February 2008 Rush session. It will also be the time to wish our newest graduates the best in their future travels and endeavors, as they enter the honored profession of dentistry.

Currently, our fraternity chapter consists of 43 men and women from the D2, D3 and D4 classes. By the beginning of March, after rush is complete, we shall have our newest D1 members.

During the summer and fall sessions of 2007, our fraternity was active in community service and social events. Concurrently, The Delta Psi Chapter has been raising and saving money to alleviate our past monetary deficit.

In August, Dr. and Mrs. Gary Coleman, our Faculty Advisor and Province Councilor and his wonderful wife, hosted their annual welcome back party for Psi Omega members. This year, they had a Ger- man theme and the food well represented the culture. Bratwurst and sauerkraut was just one of the many authentic German combinations we feasted upon that fine day. We enjoyed the afternoon with an initial officers meeting and planning session for the semester followed by an afternoon of fun filled festivities. We cooked on the grill, went swimming, and welcomed back all of the members of the fraternity getting everyone excited for a great 2007 – 2008 year.

Later in August, we hosted a tri-fraternity party with the other two fraternities at a local bar called Suede in Dallas. This event is to attract the newest D1s and educate them on the fraternity system in the college, and that we are the best one to join, of course. ;-) In all seriousness, this is the first opportunity that the Delta Psi Chapter has to invite and welcome potential new members and tell them about the process of rushing fraternities at Baylor.

Continuing into early September, the Delta Psi Chapter had many members participate in The Children’s Oral Health Center 2nd Annual 5K SmileWalk 2007 around White Rock Lake in Dallas. The purpose of the SmileWalk is to raise money for the Children’s Oral Health Center. The mission of the Children’s Oral Health Center is to provide comprehensive dental care, education and treatment for underserved children so that self-esteem, learning and quality of life are not compromised by poor oral health. The Delta Psi Chapter raised over $800 for this excellent cause.

Running along in September, we hosted a meeting at the Elbow Room, a nearby establishment, for a pinning party. All of the newest members in attendance, now new D2s, were pinned. The Delta Psi Chapter tries to encourage their members to wear their pin on their left scrub lapel, as well as at outside school events, to promote the knowledge and further awareness of dental fraternity involvement.

And before we knew it, it was October. Our tri-fraternity Halloween party was excellent. The 3 fraternities combined forces again to put on an excellent roof top party overlooking the Dallas skyline. The evening consisted of a large fire in a pit on the roof, great stories, amazing costumes, and an open bar with music. The evening was definitely a night to remember, especially seeing many of our fellow classmates in very outrageous costumes.

This semester has required a lot of hard work from our scrub chair officers, Rory Smith and Christina Ky. I would like to fully acknowledge their efforts and stamina. Our major fundraising mechanism is to sell scrubs at our school with the official college logo on them. We purchase scrubs from a vendor and make a mild profit per sale. The extra time and effort our D2s put in this semester helped raise us from red into the green. We will maintain this momentum to ensure the future classes will not have such a rough fiscal year.

In closing, for at least the next couple of months until the next Frater Magazine, The Delta Psi Chapter would like to thank all of the Psi Omega Alumni, the National President and the home office for their continuous help and support. Our community service chairs have been very active, creating new events for us to participate in. The Texas Mission of Mercy should be our next community service event, headed by Sam Ellsworth, a vital and very active D2. The Delta Psi Chapter would also like to send our warmest wishes to Dr. Gary Coleman, our Faculty Advisor and Province Councilor. We would also like to pass a shout out to Dr. Christine Beninger, Dr. Mark Gannaway, and Dr. Kay Mash who are Psi Omega members for their everyday guidance and support at The Baylor College of Dentistry!
