News Fall 2007 The past couple of years have been great at the Baylor College of Dentistry for Psi Omega. In the future, we vow to make our updates much more frequent than they have been! From the Class of 2008, 15 new members were excited to join Psi Omega. From the Class of 2009, we recruited 15 enthusiastic new members. And just recently in April of 2007, we brought in our newest 15 members from the Class of 2010. This year we will be graduating 11 Psi Omega seniors who will be going out into the Real World and starting to make their first dollar. So, at this time our total membership is approximately 51 students. After attending the National Conclave Meeting in April, I found out that our rush is quite different from that of other schools. So, we would like to explain how Rush is traditionally held at The Baylor College of Dentistry. Here we go! Every year, the first year class, called “D1”, gets its chance to rush a fraternity. Baylor only allows first year students to participate in rush. Rush is traditionally held the week in March after Spring Break. Rush events last from Tuesday until Friday. Now each of the three dental fraternities, Delta Sigma Delta, Xi Psi Phi and Psi Omega, has one day of activities with a tri-frat event on the last day to bring everyone together. A day of rush consists of breakfast, lunch and dinner provided by the fraternity of the day accompanied by a casual presentation and information session during lunch. The main event for each day occurs at night. Each fraternity picks a theme for their day. Rush t-shirts for active fraternity members are worn throughout the week to let the D1 Students know of their involvement and support for their own individual fraternity. Our theme this year was “Party Like a Rock Star” and “Omerican Idol”. The party was held out on White Rock Lake nearby to Dallas, Texas and the students had the opportunity to sing and dance the night away karaoke-style! The week after rush, preference sheets are filled out by the rushees of the Freshman Class. Next, the Interfraternity Council meets with the faculty advisor, Dr. Gary Coleman for Psi Omega, to review the preference sheets. Fraternity selections and notifications of acceptance are then made. Every student who rushes will receive a membership in one of the three fraternities and membership is divided evenly. So, if 60 rush, Psi Omega will receive 20 new members that year. This method has its plusses and minuses. There is never a flood, but never a drought. We would
like to thank all of the Psi Omega Alumni, the National President and
the home office for their awesome help and support. The Delta Psi Chapter
would also like to send our warmest thanks to Dr. Gary Coleman and Dr.
Kay Mash for their everyday guidance and support here at The Baylor College
of Dentistry part of the Texas A&M University System! |
